John’s professional network extends beyond Prospect Law, as he is an affiliate consultant with the Washington, DC-based Nuclear Economics Consulting Group (NECG). This role allows him to contribute his expertise to clients facing economic and business issues in nuclear power and decommissioning projects. For the past six years, John has also provided specialist nuclear engineering and skills advice to the UK Government’s Department for Education and its stakeholders as a member of the Institute for Apprentices and Technical Education Engineering & Manufacturing Route Panel.
His past roles include Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Institute, the professional nuclear body in the UK, and Nuclear Manager at the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board. John led a project with international partners to develop a £12m training centre and curriculum for UK reactor operators for the Westinghouse AP1000. He was the UK’s representative on an International Atomic Energy Agency project, carrying out original multi-year research and policy advice into the environmental impact and remediation of Soviet-era submarine and ice-breaker nuclear power plants dumped in Arctic waters, including a study into potential re-criticality of submerged submarine cores.
John spent over twenty years in the Royal Navy in roles such as nuclear submarine engineering, submarine operations, policy, intelligence, and training. He was a submarine reactor supervisor, operator, and Engineer of the RN’s shore-based training reactor. His last role in the Royal Navy was as Director of Education.
He is a qualified nuclear engineer and reactor physicist, a Fellow of the Nuclear Institute, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Physicist. John graduated from Exeter College, Oxford University, earning an MA in Physics. He also holds a Masters in Astrophysics, Defence Studies, and Business, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Nuclear Reactor Technology. John is Chairman of a global automotive & educational charity, the Aston Martin Heritage Trust. He is also a qualified professional photographer.
